The Cardozo Kindersley Workshop is a continuation of David Kindersley's ideas and approach to a workshop culture. In a succession of locations Kindersley was able to demonstrate how well a small specialist, quasi-familial grouping of crafts people could work to an impeccably high standard whilst sustaining itself financially. The Workshop moved in 1977 to a converted infants' school in Victoria Road Cambridge, the premises the Cardozo Kindersley Workshop still occupies.

Apprentices are taken on for three years to learn within the fertile workshop environment. The first months are spent concentrating on letterforms, then on stone itself (cutting and rubbing), and then drawing the letters on to the stone. This is watched closely and there is continuous guidance (draw, and draw again) until it is cutting time. Everything done at any time in stone needs to be the best that can be done - so the first alphabet will be cut by the apprentice and corrected by the teacher. It is a slow process of example and action into an upward spiral of learning and appreciation. | |||
